Chicago Hip-Hip Conglomerate Sidewalk Chalk Performs at the Shadow
In 1987, Philadelphia based hip-hop group The Roots formed, changing the face of hip-hop forever. Twenty-five years later, a new group from Chicago going by the name Sidewalk Chalk is attempting to follow in their footsteps.
Formed in 2008 after meeting at Columbia College in downtown Chicago, this eclectic group led by front-man MC K’neqta Dots and vocalist S-Star is deep rooted in a variety of musical genres ranging from jazz to soul to hip-hop.
All together, the group consists of eight members – MC, vocals, keys, drums, bass, trombone and trumpet – their instrumental talent allowing them to appeal to a much wider audience; award winning dancer Jumaane Taylor also contributes to the group, giving them a truly unique performance as both a song and dance group.
Although the band’s members come from all walks of life, one common thread ties them together: music. Fresh off the release of their debut album “Corner Store” released this past March with help from Greg Mangers (a contributor on Lupe Fiasco’s “The Cool”), the group has put on shows across the country, including opening act performances for the critically acclaimed De La Soul and Queens, NY up-and-comer Action Bronson.
As Sidewalk Chalk’s reputation continues to grow, the group has started make a name for themselves. Receiving the award for “Best Hip-Hop Act in Chicago 2010” by the Chicago Reader, Sidewalk Chalk has since been featured on 2dopeboyz, Guest of a Guest Los Angeles, and CBS News Online. Their hard work even earned them a performance with their predecessor ?uestLove of the Roots as this unique group continues to receive further accolades and awe crowds everywhere.
