May 2007: In Pittsburgh, a young turntable crew consisting of DJ Detonate and DJ Sasan record a full-length mashup project that immediately turns the local underground on its head with its unique, frenetic style, ingenious remixes, and strong mainstream appeal. Featuring a selection of exclusive verses from rappers like XXL “Freshman Class” nominee Emilio Rojas, recent Rostrum Records signee Boaz, Scribble Jam veteran Ron Noodles, and well respected Sole Vibe and Fortilive collectives, The Free Crack Giveaway is also one of the first major mix tapes to feature a young, still unsigned Pittsburgh rapper named Wiz Khalifa. The mix gains instant recognition, landing the duo an immediate guest residency in Rome, fixed residency in Pittsburgh, and establishes Detonate and Sasan as dynamic musicians with a deep roster of talented collaborators.
June 2012: Having parlayed their early success into a music career that has so far included appearances in Europe and Asia, a national college tour with GrooveBoston, and an in-house production role at Randy Jackson’s Love Deacons of Soul label, Detonate and Sasan have returned to the mix that launched it all. This time around, they’ve updated the Free Crack Giveaway with a full digital remaster, and redone tracking to give the beloved project the official online release it never got in ’07. The underground classic sounds as fresh as it did five years ago, delivering an impressively creative and hard hitting mashup style that sounds equally at home at the dance club or out of a boom box.
Hits resonate immediately, but only classics can sound brand new years later. On its fifth anniversary, The Free Crack Giveaway proves that DJ Detonate and DJ Sasan made a genuine classic.
