BACKSPIN: Week of February 19-25

It was announced this week that Mac Miller will make his sitcom debut in July when he appears on executive producer Queen Latifah’s “Single Ladies” on VH1. Regarding his cameo, Mac told XXL, “I was a little nervous doing the whole acting thing but since I’m playing myself it wasn’t really hard; I just did what I would do in every situation.”

In other national TV news, Wiz Khalifa, DJ Bonics and company wrapped shooting BET’s “Rip the Runway” on Saturday. No word yet on when that is scheduled to air.

Pittsburgh hip hop duo Folkland (formerly known as Los & CLG) signed on with Play On Records and are scheduled to release an album No Fans Just Critics later this year. To get a taste of their music, check out “Favorite Girl” which is one of my personal favorites.

Another duo, this time a artist & producer, also made moves this week. Middi and Geek Beatz have joined on with veteran B-Brixx‘s The Organization and are currently in the studio working on their first album. This information comes as the three artists prepare to embark on the “Life Of The Party” tour, a tour of colleges in the Tri-State area. They will be joined by YNV artist YNG MAK and Common Wealth Family. Tour kicks off at Penn State, (State College Campus) March 26th, 2011.

BACKSPIN: Week of January 1-7

This week’s major news comes from Wiz Khalifa with his release of the G-Mix video co-starring Snoop Dogg, Juicy J and T-Pain. It was released on 1/7 and by this morning was already #1 on YouTube (113,655 views as of the time of this post).

We also saw several other video releases. The quality has definitely stepped up and is evident in the new one from Tolly for “Okay” directed by 18 year old Ohio native Frank Benson. The young director claims to have worked with Taylor Gang, though I couldn’t find anything to support this. Maybe it’s in the works.

Jordan Beckham was busy this week, as usual. He released a new ANTUKS cypher video with BZE and Dous Noun, announced the winner of his cypher contest and also released a music video for Shad Black. Jordan announced on his facebook page that he is working on a new video for Common Wealth Family. I’m sure we’re all anxious for that. Even after all this hard work, Jordan found the time to interview with the Baldwin-Whitehall Patch, his suburban Pittsburgh hometown newsite. Check out www.ANTUKS.com for a complete list of all videos produced by Jordan and his team.

OTHER VIDEOS: “Whaddup” Mike B prod. by Brandon Dull, “Burnin” Real Deal prod. by AZ Productions and “Simple Man” Nova, self produced.

Fellow blogger Rory of stilltown.blogspot.com, known for digging up old school Pittsburgh hip hop, released a compilation mixtape. Featuring artists like Living Proofe, Black Sun, ChaRon Don and Gene Stovall with production from producer Shade Cobain and more….this is a must download. Also released was our top viewed post, a mixtape effort from Lil Tone entitled “Coochie Chronicles”. A little bit of promo goes a long way.

Pittsburgh hip hop native DJ Big Phill announced that he will be releasing an album entitled “The Adventures of Billy Dee Williams”. The first project he is working on from that release is a collab track entitled “Always Official” that features artists like Beedie, Divine Seven, Vaig, Boka and more. The video is still in pre-production while Phill waits for the final verses to be submitted. We’ll bring you the video as soon as it drops.
