Review: “Sorry So Long” Lay Lanskey

Lay Lanskey is a rapper’s rapper. Sorry So Long is a great collection of songs spanning various styles of hip hop and showcasing the MC’s ability to switch up his flows and bars to match whatever beat he’s attacking. While most artists stay in one lane, Lay isn’t afraid to step up and create a diverse project which will have something for everyone. Hyped up tracks, weed anthems, reflective tracks, and simplistic southern style tracks round out this very solid project.

On a great introduction, Lay proves his ability to flow and spit bars on a familiarly sampled beat. Continuing of the use of recognizable sounds, “Silence” is a solid track including a welcomed feature from Pittsburgh great “Boaz” as Lay goes in over the same beat sample used on Troy Ave’s “Peace and Love (Swish)”. Not taking any time off, next up is “365” which is a solid anthem with a pounding beat and an infectious hook. From infectious to blunted, “All I Do” is a great weed anthem and displays how Lay goes from style to style without ever losing a step. “Lip Service” is one of those tracks you’re either gonna love or it, personally I loved it as the truly unique simple beat is extremely effective and Lay flows brilliantly over it and showcases his skill at crafting humorous metaphors like “like to do it with no hands, call it bluetooh brain”. “All or Nothin’” is a throwback to Jeezy’s classic “Go Crazy” and the honesty conveyed in this track is amazing. “Gametime” is an epic stadium status anthem which boasts great guest appearances and is easily one of the highlights of the album. “Da Corner” has a jazzy feel to it and is heavy on the keys and a great bass line, with a solid feature from Phat Maxx, this is another highlight of the album, with the only complaint being that it ended too early.

One of the downfalls of the album is “Sour, Piff & 50” which is exactly what the title sounds like, an homage to “Beamer, Benz or Bentley”. It’s not bad, but honestly, after the countless remixes of that song, while this is a variation of the beat, it’s still just another song that makes you wanna listen to the original Banks/Santana instead. It seems like the only thing this album suffers from is too many songs that rely on familiar samples, and while it’s not as bad as just rhyming over other peoples’ beats, it still creates a desire to hear the track of influence rather than continue to enjoy the song that’s currently on. This also happens on “Decisions”, which is actually a really sick flip of Kanye’s “Heard Em Say”, and is perhaps the best example of recreating a familiar song with a new twist.

Lay Lanskey has crafted a complete project with Sorry So Long, whether it be southern rap, weed tracks, heady jazz tracks, or whatever else he pulls out of his bag of tracks. Lay has a variety of lyrical styles and a very mature flow, he’s confident which helps in the delivery of his bars. Although perhaps a bit too heavy on throwback samples from other artists, I have no problem with being influenced, but as I mentioned, if you can’t top the original, then it’s probably not worth relying on the familiarity of a beat. I would definitely recommend this album for fans of diversity and just overall great music, it’s not without faults but it’s certainly a solid tape that deserves a good listen.

Pittsburgh Rapper Boaz Speaks on Signing to Rostrum Records

(XXLMag.com) – Late last week, up and coming MC Boaz officially signed to Rostrum Records. It had been a long time coming for the official partnership between the Pittsburgh rapper and his hometown label.

“It was just the right time with the expansion of the resources and everything, it made things a lot easier,” Boaz told XXLMag.com. “It wouldn’t have made sense for me to go anywhere else. It’s such a powerhouse, and me being from Pittsburgh. It was just all love. It came together at the right time. I had a few meetings with a few different labels, but with them knowing me personally, and which direction my career wanted to go in, it made it a comfortable fit. We basically starting from this ground level. They got this indie hustle and they know what it takes.”

“I’m very excited that Boaz is joining the Rostrum family,” Rostrum President Benjy Grinberg said in a statement. “I have been a big fan of Bo and his music for many years, and I’m looking forward to working with him in a more substantial way.”

Boaz has collaborated with both of Rostrum’s flourishing rap acts—Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller—in the past, and is excited to now officially be part of the team. “With a situation like that, with the artists they got signed now being two of the most influential artists in the game, it’s gonna open up a lot of avenues,” he continued. “It’s a lot of work ahead. I wanna be able to stand up to the plate and go hard. Me and Mac chopped it up about two weeks ago at The Bamboozle Festival. It’s been in the works for the last couple months, so it’s something we all knew was gonna happen, it’s just a matter of when.”

He’s not about to relax now that the ink has dried, though. On the contrary, Boaz is ready to build his momentum, as he’ll be joining Wiz and Mac for the Under The Influence of Music Tour this summer, and dropping his free project, Bases Loaded before the fall. “Right now, with the opportunity that presented itself, it’s looking good from all angles: promotion, marketing, booking,” Bo said. “I’m at the plate with everything in front of me, I just gotta swing and take this shit out the park.”

Boaz Joins Mac Miller and Wiz Khalifa on Rostrum Records

It was announced today that Boaz signed to Rostrum Records. What an exciting day in Pittsburgh hip hop! Check out the official announcement below via Rob Markman of MTV.

Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller’s Pittsburgh gang just got a little bit bigger.

On Friday (June 1), independent label Rostrum Records announced that they’ve signed Boaz, a bubbling MC from the ‘Burgh who has made his mark with a number of street-hardened mixtapes. And this summer, Boaz will join his new labelmates onstage for the Under the Influence of Music Tour.

“I’m very excited that Boaz is joining the Rostrum family,” label president Benjy Grinberg said in a press release issued to MTV News on Friday. “I have been a big fan of Bo and his music for many years, and I’m looking forward to working with him in a more substantial way.”

“It wasn’t a decision that was very hard for me given their track record of developing talented learned musicians into great artists,” Bo added in the release. “I’ve known the folks over there [at Rostrum] for some time and I think it is a good fit for both parties!”

Rostrum took a teenage and then-unknown Wiz and helped build him up through the mixtape and live-show circuits for several years before releasing his gold-selling, major-label debut, Rolling Papers, last year, cementing him as one of hip-hop’s brightest stars. With regard to Mac Miller, Grinberg and his Rostrum team have taken the independent route, choosing to grow Mac without the help of a major label. All of the hard work paid off when Miller’s Blue Slide Park debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart when it was released back in November.

Boaz, however, brings something distinctly different to the Rostrum mix. “I just bring that underground feel,” Bo told MTV News in December, describing his deeply rooted street sound. “I embrace the culture of that poverty line that I’m speaking about.”

Bo’s last mixtape, The Transition, released in May 2011, featured guest appearances from Mac Miller, Jay Rock and GLC and received critical acclaim among rap’s underground. Next, Boaz will drop a free Internet-based project titled Bases Loaded; expect it early this summer.

NYC invasion: Pittsburgh’s premiere hip-hop acts take over the birthplace of hip hop

- Posted by Rory D. Webb Pittsburgh City Paper

Some of Pittsburgh’s up-and-coming hip-hop acts are taking to New York City all at once this week. Here’s a quick breakdown:

April 24 – The mayhem begins Tuesday when Chevy Woods and Boaz link up for “A Pittsburgh Affair”. Taylor Gang recording artist and Wiz Khalifa’s partner-in-rhyme, Woods headlines the event at S.O.B.’s. In recent years, that venue’s stage has hosted performances by Drake, Kanye West and Rick Ross. On this night, S.O.B.’s showcases two Pittsburgh rap vets. Woods’ music video, “Home Run“, has been viewed over 200,000 times as he prepares the release of his new mixtape, Gangland. Joining Woods for the showcase event is Larimer native Boaz. Woods and Boaz are familiar with working together, as Woods was a heavily featured rapper on Boaz and his Govament crew’s 2007 mixtape release, Election Day.

April 24Rhyme Calisthenics: The Official MC Competition hosts the fourth show of its NYC Series at Bamboo. The series of five shows began in January as four first-time competitors performed several rap challenges from the large, game show-style wheel, with the hopes of winning and advancing. Tuesday night’s final qualifier round will decide the fourth MC to compete in the subsequent championship round. This month’s competing MCs are Baxter Wordsworth, Atlas’, Skittlez, and Jess Jaymez. The competition makes its anticipated return to Pittsburgh in early summer.

April 25 – Halfway through the Macadelic Tour promoting his newest mixtape, Mac Miller returns to Roseland Ballroom on Wednesday. A year ago, Miller was an opening performer at Wiz Khalifa’s Rolling Papers album release party. Opening for Miller on the Macadelic Tour is rap duo The Come Up. Fellow Pittsburghers, Franchise and Vinny Radio have been performing with Miller for the majority of his most recent tours and are preparing for the release of their new album April 30.

April 26 – Rapper Beedie‘s Above the Weather Tour began in Pittsburgh on April 14 and continued last week in Philly. This Thursday Beedie takes Manhattan by storm with a performance at the Grisly Pear. The intimate venue should allow the charismatic MC to do what he does best: connect with his audience. Other upcoming tour stops include Erie, Detroit, and a return to Pittsburgh’s Altar Bar with Action Bronson.
