Rhyme Cal Returns to Pittsburgh

Rhyme Calisthenics returns to Pittsburgh tomorrow, June 16th, at Shadow Lounge. It is hosted by Thelonious Stretch with music by DJ Big Phill.

Rhyme Calisthenics is an MC competition that combines the intensity of a rap battle with the excitement and unpredictability of a game show. While rap battles only require one skill – the ability to diss one’s opponent – Rhyme Calisthenics is the true test of an MC’s versatility, creativity and swagger.

The competition is based around a six foot game show wheel known as “The Wheel of Skillz.” The Wheel has 12 different rap challenges designed to test a wide range of real life rap skills from freestyles to writtens, from concepts to delivery.

In each competition a cast of MC’s spin the Wheel of Skillz and get 45 seconds to perform one of twelve different rap challenges. In each round a panel of three judges award scores and determine who advances and who gets eliminated. Judges award points in three categories: originality/creativity, delivery/swagger, and execution of the challenge. In the event of a tie the crowd is the tie-breaker. The winner walks away with cash money, prizes and ultimate bragging rights.

One of the categories on the Wheel is “Last Word” meaning all the ending syllables of each phrase must rhyme. Rhyme Cal contestant Jon Quest was inspired by this and wrote a song with the same name. Check it out!

Competing MC’s:
3PFD
D. Yerk
Jadon (Phi/NYC)
Jon Quest
PremRock (Phi/NYC)
Shad Ali
Thrify
Tony Green (NJ)

This is also an excellent networking opportunity for anyone in the music business. Don’t miss it.

Steel Wheels Hip Hop Benefit Raises $900 for Charity

On Thursday, March 8, the Shadow Lounge in East Liberty was host to “Steel Wheels: A Hip-Hop Benefit for Cerebral Palsy,” an all-ages charity event to raise money for Cerebral Palsy research and treatment. The event was created to honor a Pittsburgh Hip-Hop fan living with Cerebral Palsy, Ramon Luis Silva Jr., and raised $900 for a Cerebral Palsy charity of Mr. Silva’s choice. Hosted by Dos-Noun, the benefit featured live performers including Hubbs, Varsity Squad, The Come Up, and B. White.

After a few songs from opener Joe Boots of the Boot Prints Screen Printing shop, the first scheduled performer was Hubbs. Hubbs is from Penn Hills and is slated to release his Modern Vintage II mixtape on March 22nd. Hubbs was joined on stage by DJ Bamboo, a Pittsburgh-based Battle DJ and classically trained musician.

The second performance was by Varsity Squad, a Hip-Hop duo comprised of Beedie and Jon Quest. The pair have each dropped solo mixtapes such as Beedie’s The Beat Bully LP and Jon Quest’s The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest Season 2, but the group performed songs from Varsity Squad’s New School Boom Bap, a mixtape they released last month. The group opened with “Come Back,” a song that the duo also released as a music video to promote New School Boom Bap.

The third performers were Braddock group The Come Up. Featuring members Vinny Radio and Franchise, The Come Up have gained notoriety by touring with national recording artist and Pittsburgh native Mac Miller, and are also part of the Pittsburgh collective The 58′s. The duo opened with a performance of “Smipsy,” a song which the two also recently released a music video for, and closed with “The Formula (5ths & 8ths)” from The 58′s self-titled debut mixtape.

The last performer of the night was McKeesport rapper B. White, also of The 58′s. B. White was joined on stage by fellow member of The 58′s Mayo and rapper 4 Pound. The three performed songs from B. White’s 2011 mixtape The Evidence, including “Hardwood Classic” and “Stackin’ & Flippin’,” as well as songs from Mayo & B. White’s collaborative album The Mon Valley Miracle. Mayo also performed “Mon Music,” a recently released song that features production by Sledgren of Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang.
