Steel Wheels Hip Hop Benefit Raises $900 for Charity

On Thursday, March 8, the Shadow Lounge in East Liberty was host to “Steel Wheels: A Hip-Hop Benefit for Cerebral Palsy,” an all-ages charity event to raise money for Cerebral Palsy research and treatment. The event was created to honor a Pittsburgh Hip-Hop fan living with Cerebral Palsy, Ramon Luis Silva Jr., and raised $900 for a Cerebral Palsy charity of Mr. Silva’s choice. Hosted by Dos-Noun, the benefit featured live performers including Hubbs, Varsity Squad, The Come Up, and B. White.

After a few songs from opener Joe Boots of the Boot Prints Screen Printing shop, the first scheduled performer was Hubbs. Hubbs is from Penn Hills and is slated to release his Modern Vintage II mixtape on March 22nd. Hubbs was joined on stage by DJ Bamboo, a Pittsburgh-based Battle DJ and classically trained musician.

The second performance was by Varsity Squad, a Hip-Hop duo comprised of Beedie and Jon Quest. The pair have each dropped solo mixtapes such as Beedie’s The Beat Bully LP and Jon Quest’s The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest Season 2, but the group performed songs from Varsity Squad’s New School Boom Bap, a mixtape they released last month. The group opened with “Come Back,” a song that the duo also released as a music video to promote New School Boom Bap.

The third performers were Braddock group The Come Up. Featuring members Vinny Radio and Franchise, The Come Up have gained notoriety by touring with national recording artist and Pittsburgh native Mac Miller, and are also part of the Pittsburgh collective The 58′s. The duo opened with a performance of “Smipsy,” a song which the two also recently released a music video for, and closed with “The Formula (5ths & 8ths)” from The 58′s self-titled debut mixtape.

The last performer of the night was McKeesport rapper B. White, also of The 58′s. B. White was joined on stage by fellow member of The 58′s Mayo and rapper 4 Pound. The three performed songs from B. White’s 2011 mixtape The Evidence, including “Hardwood Classic” and “Stackin’ & Flippin’,” as well as songs from Mayo & B. White’s collaborative album The Mon Valley Miracle. Mayo also performed “Mon Music,” a recently released song that features production by Sledgren of Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang.

Review: “New School Boom Bap” Varsity Squad

Varsity Squad is a Pittsburgh rap duo consisting of Beedie and Jon Quest, two young emcees with different styles but an undeniable chemistry.  After roughly two years of developing their debut, the two managed to put together a project that, if they were older, would show their age.  But these guys are young, so this instead shows their dedication to their craft and its rich history, which is a refreshing change from many other “new school” projects.

When laying claim to the “boom bap” era of rap, one certainly has big shoes to fill, even when your product is of the “new school” variety.  There is a level of expectation that comes with recreating, referencing, or even paying tribute to a time period that many die-hard fans consider to be the “golden era.”  New School Boom Bap takes on the challenge and, for the most part, passes with flying colors.

It has to be said that Beedie and Jon Quest, though still evolving artists, both hold their own lyrically throughout the tape.  This is especially apparent on songs such as “Close” and “First Thought” when the two really find their feet and deliver some content that seems, quite frankly, beyond their years.  On the latter, between a hook that rhymes, “If you didn’t say what you thought, somebody would,” each artist gives listeners their thoughts on subjects ranging from youth violence to insecurities in their music to world hunger to lost family members.  Oh, and a Rakim sample on top of that?  Quality.

To keep things short: if you are expecting to hear sing-song, radio-friendly hip hop on this project, move on to the next one.  Unless you hopped in your DeLorean and drove it to Brooklyn circa 1995, chances are you won’t catch a sound like this on today’s radio.  But if you want some hard-hitting drums mixed with each half of the duo’s unique yet refined style, this is the project for you.  And for those of you who can’t get enough of that ’90s feel, there are several surprises here including, but not limited to, samples from a young Nas, Snoop Dogg and the timeless Eric B and Rakim classic, “Paid In Full.”  Does it get more golden than that? 3.5/5

If you can relate, start a petition for Varsity Squad to get us a vinyl copy.

Since it’s not the ’90s, download the tape digitally here.

Mac Miller Makes His Picks For Next Big Pittsburgh MCs

Get More: Music News

Yes, the world knows Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller, but Pittsburgh has a wealth of hip-hop talent. With the Steel City’s two breakout stars already accounted for, MTV News took a trip to the ‘Burgh to see who’s got next.

“A lot of people are talented. There are just a million talented people out there,” Miller told MTV News when he took us on a tour through his hometown in December.

Acts like Boaz, Chevy Woods, B White and Mayo of the 58′s, Jasiri X and Varsity Squad have been repping Pittsburgh locally for some time now, and while Mac supports all the city’s homegrown talent, if he had to pick one act to break out nationwide, it would be the Come Up, a.k.a. the duo of Vinny Radio and Franchise.

“I brought them on tour and I plan on bringing them out on tour, so if it’s up to me, they’re gonna be the next people that come out the ‘Burgh,” Miller said. “But there’s definitely a lot more people who could; it’s not just Vinny and Fran.”

Mac Miller introduces Pittsburgh’s hottest producers.

The Come Up exist as a part of a larger hip-hop collective called the 58′s, along with rappers B White and Mayo. That union exemplifies the type of unity that exists in Pittsburgh’s rap scene.

“It’s a small city … so pretty much we’ve all been familiar with each other for a long time,” Franchise said. “Everybody in this city who’s pretty much doing it legit, we’ve all been trying to get it and put the city on.”

Taylor Gang’s Chevy Woods echoed a similar sentiment. “Everybody’s hardworking, and it’s not like a big music scene out there, so when you got somethin’, you just go with it,” he said. “Everybody sees the light that shines on [Wiz Khalifa] and Mac [Miller] and now it’s trickling down to everybody else.”

Wiz Khalifa motivates Pittsburgh’s up-and-coming artists.

There is a pretty diverse group of rap characters that come out of Pittsburgh. Wiz is a hitmaker who dedicates a lot of his catalog to partying and getting high, while Mac embodies a youthful spirit. Boaz is street, and female MC Kellee Maize spits sociopolitical bars. “To be honest, I do think Boaz is right there on the cusp. I think I’m maybe close to the cusp too,” Maize said, laughing.

“I just bring that underground feel,” Boaz said, describing his deeply rooted street sound. “I embrace the culture of that poverty line that I’m speaking about.”

For years, Time Bomb has been an epicenter for Pittsburgh hip-hop. More than just a clothing store, Time Bomb has become a place for local ‘Burgh MCs to congregate and sling their mixtapes to hungry fans. The shop’s owner, Brick, has seen many young artists walk through his doors, including Miller and Khalifa. When it comes to the future of Pittsburgh hip-hop, Brick is a wide-eyed optimist.

“I think Mac and Wiz opened the door, but there’s gonna be an army of producers, an army of rappers, and they’re gonna be all different. People know: Pittsburgh, it is what it is, it’s a hardworking town,” he said. “I can name 100 people, because I want everyone to make it from here, you understand? This is Pittsburgh.”
